Horror plane crash kills 10 and leaves 17 injured after aircraft plunges into Brazilian town

Ten people have died and 17 others have been injured after a small plane crashed into buildings in the Brazilian tourist town of Gramado.

The aircraft struck multiple structures in a largely residential area, including a chimney and a furniture store, before bursting into flames.


The incident occurred just minutes after the plane took off from nearby Canela airport on Sunday, according to Brazil’s Civil Defense Agency.

The pilot, along with nine other family members aboard the plane died, while more than a dozen people on the ground were rushed to hospital with injuries.

The twin-engine Piper aircraft hit a building’s chimney before striking the second floor of a residential property, then crashed into a mobile phone shop, with debris from the resulting explosion striking a nearby house.

Security cameras captured footage of the small Piper plane departing from Canela airport, located approximately 10km from the crash site.

The cause of the accident is unclear, with authorities noting the aircraft had encountered unfavourable weather conditions after take off.

The aircraft’s owner and pilot was identified as Luiz Claudio Galeazzi, a 61-year-old Brazilian businessman, who was travelling with his wife, their three daughters, and several other family members when the tragedy occurred.

A company employee from Galeazzi Associados was also among those who perished in the crash.

Local media reported the group had been travelling to São Paulo State when the devastating crash claimed the lives of all ten people aboard the aircraft.

Seveal people suffered from smoke inhalation due to the fire caused by the crash, while two people remain in critical condition, according to local authorities.

The town’s governor, Eduardo Leite, confirmed the number of casualties on the ground following the devastating incident.

In an online statement, Galeazzi’s company wrote: “In this moment of intense pain we are deeply thankful with the manifestations of solidarity and love that we have received from friends, colleagues and the community.”

The company also extended their sympathies to others impacted, adding: “We also express our solidarity with those who have been affected by this accident in the region.”

Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, offered his condolences and pledged that federal authorities would support the investigation into the crash.
