Very few Casualty specials reflect well on the forward-planning abilities of the administrators at Holby City hospital. This one is no exception, as it uses real-life testimonials to help tell stories about blood donors. There’s a shortage on Christmas Day which leads to Iain risking his life in the service of his patients. But there’s lightness too: specifically some cute business involving a homeless dog. It’s fair to say that Katy Perry’s latest album, 143, wasn’t a particular career highlight. That doesn’t mean she can’t still put on a show, though; this one-off sees her taking over Central Hall Westminster for a night of conversation, spectacle and hopefully, mainly back-catalogue bangers. PH

Alex Gibney’s two-part journey through the life and times of Paul Simon strikes an excellent balance between narrative storytelling and something more intangible: the essence of Simon’s creativity. It covers everything from his middle-class New York roots to the mid-career triumph of Graceland and right up to his most recent album, Seven Psalms. Concludes on Sunday. PH

Here’s a double bill of clips and celebrity fan chit-chat to round out the series – which does feel Christmassy, though possibly not quite as Christmassy as it would’ve been if this now-separated couple had been forced to reunite and fake happy families for the sake of the children or in this case, the TV audience. Best known for investigative documentaries such as Blackfish, Gabriela Cowperthwaite goes into orbit with this speculative sci-fi thriller set on the International Space Station. Scientist Kira (Ariana DeBose) has just arrived to join the six-person crew – half American, half Russian – when nuclear war breaks out (glimpsed ominously through the portholes). Both sides receive orders to take control, but the futility is clear as the Earth burns beneath them. A tense tale with a sharp edge of despair. Simon Wardell
