Euro 2024 gets underway in less than a month in Germany and England boss Gareth Southgate has already been putting serious thought into the squad he will name for the tournament
Gareth Southgate is running out of time to make decisions for England ’s squad for Euro 2024.
The Three Lions will soon start preparing for the tournament now that the 2023/24 Premier League season is over. There’s just the small matter of the European finals and the FA Cup final to navigate before focus can really start to turn to this summer’s upcoming Euros in Germany.
England reached the final on home soil in 2021 only to be edged out by Italy. Southgate will no doubt be aiming to go one further this time.
The squad might look slightly different to three years ago. Find out all you need to know ahead of the upcoming announcement:
When is the England squad announcement?
The 26-man squad for the Euros will be confirmed on Tuesday, May 21. It will take place at 1pm BST.
When is UEFA’s deadline?
This is only an internal deadline set by the FA, with Southgate due to name a preliminary squad. He could then make a few changes depending on injuries up until UEFA’s deadline of June 7 – just nine days before the tournament officially gets underway.

When does Euro 2024 start?
The Euros get underway on Friday, June 14. The first game sees hosts Germany take on Scotland at the Allianz Arena – home of Bayern Munich.
England have to wait just a couple of days to get their campaign underway. The Three Lions clash with Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.
Their second group game is four days later against Denmark, while they round off their group campaign versus Slovenia. Euro 2024 runs all the way up until Sunday, July 14.
Before the Euros get underway, England face a couple of warm-up games for Southgate to really test his squad. They host Bosnia at St James’ Park before welcoming Iceland to Wembley a week before the tournament starts.
What has been said?
England boss Southgate has already given his backing to expanded 26-man squads for the tournament. Speaking in March, he said: “There are so many questions on injuries. It’s inevitable we’re going to be naming a longer squad, which is what we did before the Euros here even though we were dealing with 26 then.
“It seems to be [settled at 23]. There is one more Uefa meeting where there’s been a little bit of talk amongst some of the coaches about possibly increasing that.”
