Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t getting an official sequel from the team behind the all-time great RPG. Instead of working on a relatively easy success by creating an official follow-up, Larian has announced that it’s “closing the book” on BG3 to create an all-new project that may release in 2028.
However, the cast behind the game is willing to return to their incredible roles even without Larian’s involvement. Despite this, there are some restrictions for some cast members if Dungeons and Dragons IP holder Wizards of the Coast want to pump out a fourth game in the series.
Baldur’s Gate 3 cast open to return
In an interview with GamesRadar, Shadowheart actress Jennifer English explained that the cast—who have become “genuine friends” since release—want to come back for a great sequel. However, that’s the catch: it has to be something great.
“I think we’re [the cast] all open to the future of it,” English explained, revealing her wish to return to the series. Nevertheless, the actress explained that Larian’s beautiful writing for the series is what fans loved about BG3 and that quality needs to return.
“If there is a future with Shadowheart, I would want it to be beautifully written and honor the game’s audience, and how inclusive and forward-thinking Larian is,” Engliah told the outlet. “If that opportunity came up and she was beautifully written, and that audience and inclusivity was honored, I would certainly consider it – but only with those conditions.”
The Shadowheart actress explained that the biggest worry is a new studio coming in and turning Shadowheart into a “cartoon version of her”.
“I’d want to go forward with that only if it honors her in a way I think we would all be proud of,” she said.
Of course, if a Baldur’s Gate 4 does eventually release—either by Larian in a decade’s time or by another studio—there’s no promise that Shadowheart, Astarion or any of the newest game’s brilliant characters would return. While it’s possible—just look at Dragon Age companions—there may be too many variations to account for.
