Golden Globes Snubs & Surprises: ‘Wicked’ Director Jon M. Chu, Meryl Streep, ‘Fallout’ & ‘Kneecap’

Must read

In an awards season that is looking pretty wicked on a number of levels, the Golden Globes pulled back the curtain on some magical contenders this morning.

With nominations announced by Mindy Kaling and a slightly named challenged Morris Chestnut very early Monday, the formerly HFPA-run ceremony waved a wand of aspiration in front of the likes of Hacks, Cate Blanchett, Slow Horses‘ Gary Oldman,  Emilia Perez, Jodie Foster, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking’s stars, The Bear & more. However, even with so many categories it sometimes feels impossible anyone could be left out, for some it will not be “the party of the year,” to quote Globes boss Helen Hoehne this AM.

Take a look at our list of who was not invited to the Nikki Glaser (who did get a comedy special nom BTW) fronted January 5 shindig on CBS and Paramount+. Plus, no streamer pun intended, a few surprises too — we see you Mr. Ford.

So, take a read, drop us a line and tell us who we may have missed. The circus is back in town.

SNUBS

Blitz A Steve McQueen directed film about the Nazis’ bombardment of London during World War II and the toll it took on individuals, families and a nation … oh yeah and its stars Saoirse Ronan (who was doubled snubbed today actually), and nothing? Hell, Blitz had the modfather himself Paul Weller in it too. What a bombshell to just ignore all that like that.

Meryl Streep  – So much love for Only Murders in the Building this Monday morning, but you forgot Meryl Streep. That’s a true crime.

Denis Villeneuve Good morning Globes voters, I have a question perhaps you could help me with: Did your  Best Picture – Drama nominee Dune: Part Two direct itself?

Jon M. Chu Please see above, but this time for the Wicked director. You gave well deserved nominations to the film itself and its fabulous stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, but left out the true wizard of all things Wicked?

Universal

Fallout Currently filming its second season, Amazon Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic megahit Fallout was obliterated today. Nothing for the Emmy nominated Walton Goggins, nothing for the Emmy nominated Best Drama overall. Dud.

The Apprentice Innately conservative Globes voters decided to leave the controversial Donald Trump biopic off the ballot this time round. Yes, there were nods for Jeremy Strong’s very strong Roy Cohn and Sebastian Stan’s stint as the former and future POTUS, but the Ali Abbasi directed film itself was absent. Are they going full Morning Joe in hopes of currying favor with the incoming regime?

Industry – HBO always does well at the star hungry Golden Globes, but the moneytraders and investment bankers on the much lauded drama couldn’t score a shilling today.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste  – Some very hard truths this morning for the much acclaimed Hard Truths actor. Jean-Baptiste has won critics’ awards in LA, DC, NY and almost everywhere else plus best actress at the British Independent Film Awards for her stunning performance in the very personal Mike Leigh directed film. Nice time to try to be a contrarian, Golden Globes, real classy.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste speaks on the panel for “Hard Truths” at the Deadline Contenders Film: Los Angeles held at the Directors Guild of America on November 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Kneecap Coming off a knees up Sundance debut earlier this year, acclaim all round, a hot tour and a sweep yesterday of the British Independent Film Awards, the Rich Peppiatt helmed comedy following the real life west Belfast hip-hop trio and their quest to save their mother tongue was well poised to bring a truly raucous ride back to the Globes. Alas, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Caireallain and J.J. Ó Dochartaigh will not be in the Beverly Hilton ballroom next month. The trio and the film will be missed, trust me.

Kneecap

IFTA

Saturday Night The much anticipated Jason Reitman directed comedy on the literal 1975 launch of SNL turned out to Not Be Ready for Globes Prime Time this year.

Ridley Scott Doubt Scott doesn’t give a toss if the Globes recognize him or not, let’s start with that. Though the group made damn sure to partake in some bread and circus’ by giving Gladiator II a Supporting Actor nom for the great Denzel Washington and put it on the second year of that weird Cinematic and Box Office Achievement list. Here’s the thing: to overlook one of the most accomplished and, let’s be honest, popular directors of our time is an insult to the 87-year-old Scott and movies themselves.

SURRPISES

Billy Bob Thornton – Taylor Sheridan shows usually see pretty slim pickins from the Globes despite their popularity. Looks like the past Oscar winner hit oil with his Landman role.

Harrison Ford Nothing last year for 1923 for the big screen icon on the small screen, and but Ford got a nom now for his Shrinking role …and he didn’t have to go full Red Hulk on the Globes to get their attention.

Kate Winslet – Never really catching the political or critical zeitgeist, HBO’s The Regime came and went last year. That clearly changed for its widely acclaimed lead today. We all expected some love for her Lee movie, but not her oddly diabolical and delightful dictator. Cleary, Globes voters and organizers really wanted to make sure Winslet showed up.
