In the wake of reports that Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan have broken up, Keoghan has deactivated his Instagram account and addressed the move in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Carpenter has not yet publicly responded to the reports of the dissolution of their relationship.
On Saturday, the Irish actor’s Instagram account had been deleted, as Us Weekly, who said the pair had broken up earlier in the week, reports.
Later on Saturday, Keoghan took to X, formerly Twitter, to explain his reasoning for deactivating his IG account.
“I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don’t respond to,” he wrote in an X statement. “I have to respond now because it’s getting to a place where there are too many lines are being crossed. I deactivated my account because I can no longer let this stuff distract me from my family and my work.”
He added, “Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine, dragging my character and everything I worked extremely hard for and stand for.”
Keoghan emphasized that others in his family were also being dragged through the mud, including his mother, and he made accusations that some have been “knocking on my grannies door” and “sitting outside my babys house intimidating them. That’s crossing a line.”
He emphasized that he did not want his two-year-old son, Brando, to read the terrible things people were writing about him when he’s older. “Each and every day I work harder to push myself on every level to be the healthiest and strongest person for that boy. I want to provide opportunities for him to learn, fail, and grow,” he wrote. He concluded, “Please be respectful to all.”
Carpenter and Keoghan dated for nearly one year before reports of their breakup emerged earlier this week.
Carpenter, who recently wrapped the U.S. leg of her tour supporting Short n’ Sweet, dropped her star-studded A Nonsense Christmas special on Netflix last night, Dec. 6.
