Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead.
The New York Police Department says that at around 06:40 EDT this morning officers were called to reports of a male who had been shot.
“Upon arrival,
officers observed a 50-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, with a
gunshot wound to the chest.”
It says emergency care teams responded and transported him to Mount Sinai West hospital in “critical condition, where he was later pronounced deceased”.
A suspect fled the scene and remains at large, and the “investigation is active and ongoing”, it says. According to police, Thompson appeared to be targeted in the attack, with the suspect waiting for him outside wearing a ski mask and cream jacket.
Investigators say they have video footage of the shooting, but they did not know the suspect’s motive. Nothing was taken from the victim, they add.
