David Beckham’s ‘smug smile’ at a royal event is an indicator of his hopes for his royal future, claims body language expert Judi James.

David and Victoria Beckham were among the many guests at an event at Buckingham Palace in London last night.

The pair were seen making their way along the East Gallery to attend the state banquet for the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Victoria looked sophisticated in a dark navy gown with a long train, long sleeves, and a silky finish. She paired the look with dangly earrings, a slicked-back ponytail and peep-toe heels.

David also looked smart in a three-piece white tuxedo, as he held onto his wife’s hand at this event.

The couple looked confident and calm in their royal surroundings, and body language expert Judi James informed Metro that David’s ‘smug’ smile might be hinting at his royal future.

‘David Beckham’s closed-lip smile here suggests he just-scored-a-hat-trick levels of smug as he walks the red carpet at the Palace. He clearly relishes the moment, looking around during the slow, stately walk, and even throwing a confident eyebrow flash of greeting to someone to his right.’

‘He has the look of a man who is where he wants to be and, in terms of that knighthood he has yearned for so long, he seems to be creating future history by looking like a lord before he actually has the title, just to show how good a fit it might be,’ claimed body language expert Judi James.

The expert added that while David looked confident, Victoria looked ‘less assured’.

‘It’s an endearing display but Victoria looks rather less assured here. She walks ahead of her husband but her rather staccato glances back in his direction suggests she’s not feeling totally confident striding out by herself.

‘As she has done at previous royal events, we can see her hand reaching out to search for the comfort of David’s hand and he complies quickly, grasping it in a meshed clasp.’

She added: ‘Anyone remembering the body language rituals of this couple when they first got together will be aware of the complete turn-around from then to now. Back then it was Victoria looking confident and comfortable with all the press and fan attention, trying to pull a very camera-shy David into poses with her then laughing when he quickly skipped out to watch from the sidelines.’

The couple was among the 170 guests invited to the dinner at the palace by King Charles.

The former England football captain secured a seat due to his close ties to Qatar after he was a paid ambassador for the country during the FIFA World Cup 2022.

David has become close with Prince Harry and Prince William over the years, being awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 2017 for his work with sporting events in the UK.

He was also invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018 and has supported the royal’s Invictus Games initiative for injured servicepeople.
