The legendary singer made the revelation in an interview with Robin Roberts that aired on Good Morning America on Monday.
The focus of the interview was a new Disney+ documentary about the singer that chronicles his five-decade-plus career, titled Elton John: Never Too Late.
After Robin asked Elton about the latest on releasing a new album, the singer revealed his health update.
“I don’t know,” he said about the status of the new record. “It’s been a while since I’ve done anything. I just have to get off my backside. I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France. It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest. There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment,” he said.
Elton noted he could do a sit-down interview but doesn’t know if he could go into the studio and record music.
“I can’t see a lyric, for a start,” he said, noting he and his team are trying to better his eyesight, which remains his focus. “At the moment, that’s really what we’re concentrating on. It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen. It kind of flawed me. I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, [and] I can’t watch anything.”
While it seems Elton is unsure of the future for both his eyesight and the possibility of a new album at the moment, it’s clear he’s staying positive.
“I’m so lucky. I’m the luckiest man in the world. I’m so proud of the documentary, I’m proud of my sons, [and] I’m proud of my attitude toward myself and what’s going on. I’m just very lucky, and I am very grateful.”
