According to the latest rumors, Google will not be releasing a Pixel Tablet 2 next year.
Google announced the Pixel Tablet in 2023 and looked set to release a successor in 2025, with a third-generation device already in the very early stages of planning for 2027.
Rumors last week said the “Pixel Tablet 2” would have a design similar to the original. Besides thinner bezels, the highlight would have been a first-party keyboard cover accessory that we learned today had a touchpad.
Yesterday, Android Headlines reported that Google canceled development on the “Pixel Tablet 3.” The device was said to be codenamed “Kiyomi” (a citrus fruit). Android Authority now reports that the device in question is actually the Pixel Tablet 2, and that Google is not moving ahead over “concerns that the company would lose money on it.”
The Pixel Tablet 2 was said to still be early in the development/prototyping cycle, but Google worked on a 5G variant.
Today’s report does not rule out work on future Pixel Tablets, like the rumored Tensor G6-powered model in 2027. There’s nothing right now about the Pixel team abandoning that large-screen form factor entirely.
As for those that already own the Pixel Tablet, this hardware development should have no impact on future software updates. There’s nothing to suggest that Android is no longer interested in large screens, especially since foldables are still hot. Desktop windowing will presumably be available as a developer option come Android 15 QPR1 in December, while Google’s rumored work on the ChromeOS-to-Android migration would still need those desktop-level optimizations.
