Paul Mescal has said it was “not on the list of priorities” to meet Britain’s King Charles III after they crossed red-carpet paths at the world premiere of Gladiator II in London last Wednesday.

Mescal made his comments to US entertainment trade publication Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of director Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Monday night.
“What was it like meeting the king?” asked Variety‘s Marc Malkin. “Had you met him before?”
“Never met the king,” Mescal replied.
“How wild is that?” said Malkin.
“How wild is it? I mean, it’s definitely not something that I thought was in the bingo cards,” said Mescal.
“I’m, like, Irish, so it’s not kind of on the list of priorities,” he continued.
“It’s an amazing thing for Ridley because I know how important that is for him, so to see his film celebrated in that context was pretty special,” Mescal explained.
“What do you say to the king?” asked Malkin.
“You just kind of nod along,” said Mescal. “I found it hard to hear exactly what he was saying because your head is in such a kind of frenzy, so you’re just kind of nodding along and smiling.”

The Mescal-starring Gladiator II opened in Irish cinemas last Friday. According to studio Paramount Pictures, it grossed over €1.4 million at the Irish box office at the weekend, making it the biggest weekend opening so far in Ireland for 2024.
Scott is already working on the script for a third Gladiator installment, according to Mescal.
