RFK Jr’s nomination for health secretary draws criticism

Robert F Kennedy Jr has been nominated as Donald Trump’s health and human services secretary, putting the prominent anti-vaccine campaigner at the head of the sprawling department.

Known as RFK Jr, the scion of the famous Democratic family abandoned his independent White House campaign in August to back Trump, earning the public disapproval of most of the Kennedy clan.

The nomination is at least as controversial as the others announced this week, including Tulsi Gabbard for intelligence chief and Matt Gaetz for attorney-general. On Thursday night, Trump said he would nominate the North Dakota governor, Doug Burgum, for interior secretary — a less controversial pick.

Kennedy has voiced his opposition to vaccines, and says that fluoride, a mineral that can help to prevent tooth decay,
