Olaf Scholz’s chief economic adviser Jörg Kukies is to become Germany’s new finance minister, hours after the chancellor sacked the previous holder of the office, Christian Lindner.
A former Goldman Sachs banker, Kukies has worked with Scholz since 2018, when he was brought in to serve as state secretary in the finance ministry, at a time when Scholz was finance minister.
When Scholz became chancellor in 2021, he designated Kukies as his chief economic adviser. He also served as Germany’s “sherpa” at international summits such as meetings of the G7 and G20.
