Two-time Academy Award Winning Actor Sir Michael Caine, who is releasing a new memoir this spring, is opening up about the first time he met Tom Cruise. Per The Times, which released an excerpt of his new book, Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over My Guide to Life, Caine talked about meeting Cruise in 1983.
“For my 90th birthday, Shakira – my wife of 51 years – arranged for Tom Cruise to come to my dinner at the River Café as a surprise. I was very touched,” Caine, now 91, wrote. “I’ve known Tom for more than 40 years. We were doing a big event for Educating Rita (1983) and I turned around and there was this young actor, very polite, asking questions about how not to be just a flash in the pan.”
“That was Tom, probably around the time of Risky Business,” Caine wrote, referring to one of Cruise’s breakout roles. “I can’t remember what I said, but it obviously didn’t do him any harm! There was something about him. He had a great attitude, this sense of poise. What interests me is that he is really one of the last true stars in movies,” Caine said about the Mission Impossible actor.

Cruise is One of the Last Movie Stars, Caine Says
Caine continued, “People will go see a film just because he’s in it. Brad Pitt is a star, Morgan Freeman has some of that quality, too. There are so few nowadays-not like John Wayne or Humphrey Bogart or Cary Grant.”
Caine himself has been a movie star for decades, having appeared in more than 130 films over his career and winning two Academy Awards. Caine has won two Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscars, one in 2000 for The Cider House Rules and one in 1987 for Hannah and Her Sisters. Caine has also appeared in movies like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, as Alfred Pennyworth and in The Muppet Christmas Carol as Ebenezer Scrooge.

Michael Caine Has Retired From Acting
In 2023, Caine announced he was officially retiring from acting. His final role was in the 2023 film, The Great Escaper. The actor said part of the decision to retire was that there would be a lack of leading roles that would be coming his way now that he is in his 90s.
“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now,” Caine said in 2023. “I’ve played the lead (in The Great Escaper) and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m going to get now are old men. Ninety-year-old men, or maybe 85, you know. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this. I’ve got wonderful reviews. What am I going to do to beat this?”
Caine’s new memoir will be released on March 25, 2025, and is available for pre-order on Amazon.
