Another bizarre GTA 6 Moon theory is here, and it’s actually winning me over

Must read

GTA 6 cannot come soon enough. Since last year’s reveal trailer, the internet has been aflame with analysis, theories, and conjecture. Will social media play a part in the story? Just who are Lucia and Jason? And why on Earth does everyone keep going crazy over phases of the Moon? Until we get our hands on the next Grand Theft Auto I’m afraid a lot of these questions will go unanswered. Still, the wait hasn’t stopped fans from yet again going overboard with theories. This time, though, I’m inclined to believe them.

First, a recap. Before Rockstar revealed the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, theories about the game were everywhere. If you put on your tinfoil hat tight enough, you’d start squinting at some of the sandbox game maker’s promotional material for clues. One notorious image of the GTA Online Vinewood sign from 2023 became the subject of such theories. Players thought the image’s V and I were suspiciously lit (making the Roman numeral VI), and that the picture’s phase of the Moon hinted toward when we’d learn more about GTA 6.

That Moon was a waning gibbous. Coincidentally (or purposefully, depending on which side of the fence you fall), Rockstar teased the first GTA 6 trailer on Friday December 1, where the Moon once again happened to be a waning gibbous. Now we come to today and you’re not going to believe it; the latest official GTA Online image from Rockstar has the Moon in it. Is the GTA 6 release date about to be revealed? Maybe.

Again, it’s a waning gibbous. Could we be looking at a tease for the second GTA 6 trailer? Or maybe even a release date? At this point I’m unsure, but the game’s community is full of ideas. The next waning gibbous starts on Monday November 17 and ends on Wednesday November 20, so some think we’ll learn more then. The above image even makes a VI over the Moon with the telephone wires. Is that a coincidence too? Probably.

One Reddit post even suggests we could learn more about GTA 6 before the next waning gibbous. They posit that two announcements, one for Red Dead Redemption 2’s delay in 2018 and another for the first tease of GTA 6’s trailer, happened on the same day as Take-Two’s quarterly earnings calls. The company’s next call is on Wednesday November 6, mere days after this waning gibbous was shown off in GTA promotional material again.

If you want that tinfoil hat to start cutting off circulation to your head, it gets even weirder. Tom Petty’s Love Is A Long Road plays during the first GTA 6 trailer, and it has the line “I would wait for the Moon.” Either this is a string of incredibly odd coincidences, or someone at Rockstar is continuing to tease us.

At this point, the wild theories are starting to win me over. Even if they turn out to be incorrect, I feel like Rockstar knows exactly what it’s doing. At the same time, this could all be a pipe dream. Perhaps we’re all reading into JPGs of the Moon a bit too much. Either way, I’d like to think Rockstar is teasing us.
