Spain, Italy, Greece or Portugal are usually Britons’ first choices when it comes to booking a summer holiday.
But while each country is popular for a reason, I think there’s a better option for tourists who want a less crowded destination free from soaring temperatures.
Scandinavia might not be at the top of most tourists’ lists in summer but in my opinion Stockholm is one of the best choices for a summer holiday in 2024.
The Swedish capital sits across 14 islands, so you’re never far from the water, and has plenty of open green space.
While areas such as Gamla Stan, the old town, can get crowded in summer, the majority of the city is far less busy than capitals in central and southern Europe. But what else makes Stockholm perfect for summer?
Festivals
Midsommar celebrates summer in Sweden and it’s one of the country’s most popular holidays. Don’t worry, it’s not anything like the Florence Pugh film. Residents traditionally gather to dance maypole and make flower crowns in a wholesome family-friendly celebration. This year, it’s on June 24.
If you can’t make that, Stockholm also comes alive at the Street Food Festival on July 26 and for Pride on July 29. The city Culture Festival is held on August 13 and offers free entry to many attractions.
Outdoor spaces
While you might be more likely to experience rain in Stockholm than in Athens, you’re much less likely to face 40 degree temperatures.
Summer in Stockholm is mild but the temperature can reach as high as 30 degrees in July and August. The city has several beautiful parks to enjoy the warm weather, including Djurgarden, an island in the centre of Stockholm.
Stockholm’s excellent public transport system also includes the city’s ferries, so hop on one to enjoy a short trip across the water under the sun. You can also head out to an archipelago island for a day trip.
Stockholm might not have renowned beaches but it does have excellent wild swimming spots. At Hellasgarden, you can take a dip in peaceful surroundings. If you’re looking for something more adventurous – hit the water on a kayak tour around the city.
Food and drink
For a city that’s one of Europe’s coldest during winter, Stockholm has a surprising amount of ice-cream parlours. Fryst has been named as one of the world’s best ice-cream cafes while Stikki Nikki has several parlours around the city with intriguing flavours including olive oil.
When it comes to drinking, Stockholm has several bars with outdoor seating. Head to Sodra Teatern for incredible views of the city. Tradgarden is one of the city’s most popular outdoor clubs located under a bridge in hip Sodermalm.
Rosendals Tradgard is a garden cafe in the heart of Djurgarden and sells freshly baked cakes and pastries outside in the orchard in summer.
