Hiker wedged upside down for seven hours trying to rescue phone

Matilda Campbell admits she’s accident-prone but even she could not have imagined that dropping a phone would get her trapped upside down in a crevice for seven hours.

The 23-year-old had stopped to take pictures in the rugged Hunter Valley, north of Sydney, while on a hike with her friends when her mobile slipped from her hand.

After Campbell fell head-first between two half-tonne boulders trying to save the phone, her fellow hikers struggled to get her out of the three-metre crevice. The remote region has only limited mobile phone reception and her friends had to search for a spot where they could get a signal and call for help.
