Woman freed after being stuck upside down in rock crevice

Must read

A self-confessed accident prone Australian woman had to be rescued after she became trapped in a rock crevice for hours after falling head first while trying to retrieve her phone.

Matilda Campbell, from New South Wales, found herself in the predicament earlier this month after she slipped into the 3m crevice in the Hunter Valley and became wedged between between two boulders and was stuck upside down.

In a post on Facebook, NSW Ambulance said that Ms Campbell’s friends tried to rescue her, but when they were unable to free her, they called for help.

At this point Ms Campbell had been hanging by her feet for more than an hour.

Rescue teams had to move large boulders to gain access

Rescue teams had to remove several heavy boulders to create a safe access point and a wooden frame was built to provide stability.

They then had to navigate Ms Campbell out through a narrow ‘S’ bend in the crevice and remove a massive 500kg boulder.

She was finally freed seven hours after her ordeal began, with only minor scratches and bruises.

Her phone was not so lucky.

In a post on social media, Ms Campbell said: “It’s safe to say I’m the most accidental prone person ever. I am okay just have some injuries I’m recovering from, no more rock exploration for me for a while!”

NSW Ambulance Specialist Rescue Paramedic Peter Watts said in his ten years as a rescue paramedic he “had never encountered a job quite like this, it was challenging but incredibly rewarding.”
