Strictly Come Dancing fans were gobsmacked when Toyah Wilcox appeared to take a swipe at Chris McCausland during her first interview since being voted off the show with dance partner Neil Jones. BBC One’s dance competition dazzled audiences this past weekend with its Movie Week special, which led to the second elimination of the series on Sunday night (October 6).

In a tense face-off, Toyah and Neil found themselves up against ex-Arsenal footballer Paul Merson and his dance partner Karen Hauer. Both couples reprised their Movie Week dances but Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke favoured saving Paul and Karen, with head judge Shirley Ballas confirming she would have made the same call.

The pair then joined Fleur East on Monday evening’s edition of the Strictly spin-off show, It Takes Two, for a debrief on their journey and thoughts about saying goodbye so soon. 80’s icon Toyah expressed disappointment over her exit but insisted she wouldn’t allow it to overshadow the “fantastic time” she’s had.

She said: “I was not off first, which meant a lot to me. I’ve had the most brilliant life-affirming experience in the last two months, I’m in a good place,” reports the Manchester Evening News. Professional dancer Neil Jones shared a heartfelt moment with Toyah, expressing his intention to stay in touch “for life” after their enjoyable time together.

‌

He said, “We’ve had really great conversations as well, and it was so nice to hear you’ve been waiting so long to do the show and it’s brilliant when she came to the show and she asked for me, that meant a lot to me.” Toyah, known for her hit ‘It’s A Mystery’, offered Fleur East some humorous advice to fellow celebrities, jokingly suggesting: “If you don’t want to do a dance-off, get rid of Chris!”

The atmosphere shifted when Neil and Fleur exchanged a look of surprise as Toyah burst into laughter, sinking into Neil’s lap. Toyah then clarified, saying: “You’re all going to have to face a dance off,” while Neil light-heartedly added: “I think she has chosen her winner already.”

‌

Liverpudlian comic Chris McCausland is Strictly’s first blind contestant and has taken the show by storm after achieving high marks and standing ovations from the studio audience with his dance routines alongside professional partner Dianne Buswell. On Saturday night he was sixth on the leaderboard with 30 points after dancing to the Wayne’s World theme tune.

Toyah’s comment stirred up a reaction among ‘It Takes Two’ viewers. One viewer, @missyousomuch, tweeted in disbelief: “Did I just hear right Toyah on ITT? ? ? You could hear a pin drop in the studio! ! ! ” Another, @maxbiddle98, expressed anger: “That was such a nasty dig Toyah just made at Chris. Malicious, vicious and jealous.”

Further viewers chimed in with @andytbrg asking for clarification: “Toyah? What was that about? ” and @jubblyjob commenting on the perceived harshness: “Toyah was a bit mean about Chris on It Takes Two.”
