A six-year-old British girl was saved after she was reportedly left to drown at a hotel pool after the lifeguard had clocked off.

Police in Tenerife have now launched an investigation into the incident at the Granada Park Aparthotel pool in Los Cristianos, on the southwest coast of Tenerife.

The terrifying incident took place at around 6.50pm on May 9, with those who found her, pulling her from the water before giving her mouth to mouth resuscitation, reports the Mirror.

It is believed that Spanish police are now trying to understand the exact whereabouts of the parents of the child at the time.

Officers are also trying to figure out the location of the lifeguard at the pool belonging to the Granada Park Aparthotel – as it’s claimed the lifeguard left at 6pm and youngster was found in the water a short while later.

The girl was reportedly conscious and very scared when the emergency services arrived at the scene. She was taken to a medical centre where she was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia. This is a condition caused by someone inhaling liquid into their respiratory tract of lungs, according to Canarian Weekly.

The girl is now reportedly stable and has been transferred to a children’s emergency department at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital.
