He warns some drivers are now being told to take a compulsory online course to teach them the basics of seatbelt safety.
This is sort of like a speed awareness course with some motorists forced to pay almost £100 to attend.
He explained: “You can also be made to complete a mandatory online education course, with prices for the privilege ranging between £54 and £95.
“Your Belt Your Life (YBYL) and What’s Driving Us? (WDU) courses are given to people who have failed to use a seat belt or who have flouted child seat rules. The courses are 30 minutes long and have a test at the end, with motorists needing to pass.”
Ten police forces are taking part in a trial of the new cameras meaning road users across almost all regions could be impacted.
Cameras are being fitted in Greater Manchester, Durham, Humberside, Staffordshire, West Mercia, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Thames Valley Police and Sussex.
According to Select Car Leasing, motorists should wear a seatbelt at all times with only a few exemptions in place.
Drivers may not need a belt if they are simply reversing or supervising a learner driver who is reversing.
Belts are also not needed while driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that are travelling no more than 50 metres between stops.
According to experts, a licensed taxi driver who is looking for customers either by being hailed in the street or by waiting at a taxi rank also may not need belts.
Motorists with certain medical conditions may also be fine to not wear a belt but this must be signed off by a doctor with a ‘Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing’.
