Larian has created one of the best RPGs in history with Baldur’s Gate 3, but it’s far from the most famous. Over the genre’s storied history, Game Freak’s Pokemon has become, by far the most recognisable RPG on the planet, and one BG3 mod has brought it into the world of Dungeons and Dragons.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Pokeball mod

While some modders are busy creating entire new maps with the game’s cracked mod tools, one modder has been busy bringing the power of Pokeballs to the Sword Coast. The new “PokeFlash” mod, available on Nexus Mods, allows you to capture creatures across the game world and use them as your own.

The new Pokeball mod adds 40 flasks to the tutorial chest in the game’s Nautiloid opening. These flasks can then be picked up and used on any entity in the game, including your allies, but some entities (such as bosses) may end up breaking the game. As much as Astarion may want to trap Curzon in a ball and chuck him off a cliff, that might ruin everything.

When you encounter a creature and throw a PokeFlash at it, that creature is immediately killed. However, the flask you used then changes name to the creature’s name and can be thrown as an ally. The PokeFlask then returns to your inventory for you to use again to capture your just-released creature or to catch something else.

Look how cute this little flask is!

Unfortunately, creatures captures in one region cannot be transferred to another, similar to other Baldur’s Gate 3 entities. Essentially, think as each region as its own Pokedex to complete, albeit one that doesn’t keep track of any data.

More bugs than Viridian Forest

At the time of writing, the new Baldur’s Gate 3 Pokeball mod is extremely buggy. Mod creator JimmSlimm warns that the mod should be used on a new playthrough as to not destroy your current run.

“Use common sense on what to use it on, or you may break the playthrough,” the modder warns. “It’s meant to be used as a fun gimmick rather than a serious modification of the game. Be prepared that your playthrough can become bricked if use a flask on something important to the story.”

Hopefully, this mod can be expanded in the future with Pokemon battle music, gyms and a full Pokedex. Now, that would be a hilarious mod to play through.
