Galaxy S24 FE misses out on major display upgrade

Must read

The Galaxy S24 FE is Samsung’s newest Fan Edition phone, and it brings several improvements over its predecessor. However, it is a Fan Edition phone, and Samsung had to cut some corners compared to the vanilla Galaxy S24. One of the corners that was cut is the display brightness.

Galaxy S24 FE display brightness falls short of Galaxy S24

The Galaxy S24 FE has a bigger screen than the Galaxy S23 FE, reaching 6.7 inches diagonally. That puts it in the same category as the Galaxy S24+. However, even compared to the base Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24 FE has a lower brightness. Its screen can reach a peak brightness of 1,900 nits. While that is much higher than the Galaxy S23 FE’s 1,450 nits, it still falls short of the Galaxy S24’s 2,600 nits peak brightness.

You are bound to notice lower brightness while watching videos and using the phone outdoors. The Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ simply look brighter than the Galaxy S24 FE. At the 7:20 mark in our hands-on video below, you can see the difference between the display brightness of the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 FE while playing videos.

The Galaxy S24 FE uses a non-LTPO OLED panel, which can only switch between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates. In comparison, the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ use an LTPO OLED panel, and they can switch the refresh rate from as low as 1Hz to as high as 120Hz.

So, the overall power consumption will be higher on the Galaxy S24 FE compared to the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+. However, the larger battery on the FE should make up for any losses in efficiency from its display panel.
