You can upgrade to Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for under £10 but just as Sony announced the deal they increased the price of the base game.
Although it wasn’t much of a surprise, considering it had already leaked out beforehand, the PlayStation 5 remaster of 2017 PlayStation 4 game Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the biggest unveils of Tuesday’s State of Play event.
Beforehand, many considered it was unnecessary, given the original game is recent enough that the graphics still look good today. But the remaster’s visuals were better than expected, with Sony’s promising that it includes 10 hours of re-recorded conversational motion capture.
There was also an unexpected bonus, where if you already own the original game you can get the remaster for just $9.99 (a UK price hasn’t been announced yet but it’ll be under £10). At the time the original was just £15.99 on the PlayStation Store but the minute the remaster was announced Sony jacked the price of the Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition up to £34.99.
How to get Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered cheap
That means that if you were thinking of getting the original game while it was cheap, in order to get the remaster at a discount rate, you’ve missed your chance.
The only way to get the original version of Horizon Zero Dawn cheap now is to find a physical copy, which should be relatively easy. The PlayStation Hits version is currently just £14.99 on Amazon but oddly the game isn’t listed at all at GAME.
As the website psprices shows, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition has been £15.99 for most of the last two years, occasionally dipping as low as £7.99 during sales.
It’s entirely up to Sony if they want to increase the prices, but if they’d just done it a few weeks earlier it wouldn’t have seemed quite so blatant.
Video games companies do this sort of thing all the time though and Microsoft was many times been criticised for manipulating and changing the price of Game Pass, to make it more difficult to take advantage of upgrade options.
Sony is obviously very keen to promote the Horizon Zero Dawn franchise as a whole at the moment, with Lego Horizon Adventures also coming out this autumn, but the problem with raising the price of the digital version is it’s now much more expensive for everyone – whether they wanted the remastered version or not.
All of this is no doubt building up to the announcement of a third game, although there’s been little in the way of rumours for that. Instead, it’s a live service multiplayer spin-off that’s been leaked more often – although it’s unclear what its fate might be in light of the failure of Concord.
