A Briton was left critical after tripping and getting impaled on a metal fence as he walked on a Greek Island beloved by holidaymakers, according to reports.

Greek media reports that the man, who is thought to be around 50 years old, fell while walking on Zante on Monday night, as per The Sun.

However, the identity of the man is not yet known.

The gruesome accident is said to have taken place shortly after 11pm yesterday at a hotel in Agrilia, a village on the south of the island, which is known locally as Zakynthos.

According to reports, fire brigades and multiple men rushed to the scene to help, and the bars of the fence were cut with the assistance of a doctor.

A spike was reportedly only millimetres away from one of the man’s carotid arteries, major blood vessels that provide the brain with blood.

The unnamed man was reportedly taken to hospital with part of a bar still stuck in his neck. He reportedly remains intubated in the hospital – a procedure that sees a tube inserted into a patient’s body, especially that of an artificial ventilation tube into the trachea.

Authorities in Greece are now reportedly investigating what happened and trying to find out more information about the Briton.
