Kate was standing at a bus stop when a woman complimented her clothes and said she would make a great personal shopper at Harrods.

The middle-aged stranger, who knew Mohamed Al Fayed, the luxury department store’s owner, asked for her number.

Kate was 31 and had recently been made redundant. “I thought ‘well that sounds really exciting’,” she recalls.

A few weeks later she was invited to Harrods’ Knightsbridge HQ to discuss a job. It turned out there was no opening for a stylist role but she was called back to “meet the boss” about a personal assistant vacancy.
