Convenience comes at a price — and in the case of the supermarkets’ local stores, that price is up to a fifth more.
Research by Which? has found that people who shop at Morrisons Daily, Sainsbury’s Local and Tesco Express pay considerably more than at larger branches of the same supermarket.
The consumer group compared the cost of 42 popular branded and own-brand grocery items during June and July and discovered that the greatest premium of 21 per cent was at Morrisons Daily.
A 400g tin of own-label chickpeas, for example, was more than double the price at the convenience store, £1 against 49p at the supermarket. A 165g tub of Philadelphia soft cheese cost 63 per cent more on average at a Morrisons Daily.
