PlayStation launches a limited edition console to celebrate its 30th anniversary – but you’ll have to be quick to get your hands on one

Must read

Retro gadget fans rejoice – PlayStation has launched a nostalgic limited edition console to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation!

The retro versions of the PS5 and PS5 Pro feature the familiar all-grey aesthetic of the original console.

What’s more, the PlayStation Portal and DualSense controllers have also been given the retro treatment with their own limited edition grey versions.

But gamers will need to be quick to get their hands on them, as Sony says it will release just 12,300 Anniversary Edition PS5 Pros.

The news has stirred up huge excitement online, with one user tweeting: ‘This hits so hard in my nostalgia gut. As a console collector I need this.’

Both the PS5 and PS5 Pro will be available while stocks last in the retro grey of the original PlayStation.

The new consoles feature the original colourful PlayStation icon as well as an embossed texture of a 30th anniverary logo which adds a ’30’ to the usual PlayStation symbols.

Each limited edition PS5 Pro will also be printed with its unique number in the run of 12,300 consoles.

On the inside, however, you will find exactly the same hardware as the regular PS5 and PS5 Pro.

The PS5 and PS5 Pro bundles will also include a themed sticker, paperclip, cable ties, and a controller cable designed to mimic the cables from the first PlayStation.

To accompany the consoles, Sony has revealed 30th Anniversary versions of the DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers in the same grey colour scheme.

These controllers sport the original PlayStation logo as well as a textured grip made up of a near-microscopic printing of the 30th Anniversary Logo.

In addition to Sony’s larger consoles, fans of the PlayStation Portal will be able to purchase the hand-held gaming device in the original PlayStation grey.

Speaking in a video introducing the products, CEO of the Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hideaki Nishino says: ‘As you know, the original PlayStation debuted in Japan on December 3, 1994.

‘We knew that in 2024 to celebrate this 30th anniversary milestone we had to create something that honoured the history and joy that PlayStation has brought us all since the 90s.’

The PS5 Pro console bundle, PlayStation Portal, and DualSense controllers will begin pre-sale at participating retailers and through the PlayStation Network on September 26 before being sent out on Novermber 21.

To order the PS5 digital edition bundle from September 26 you will need to order directly from PlayStation using a PlayStation Network account or wait until October 10 to order from participating retailers.

Somewhat ominously, Sony is yet to reveal how much any of these options will cost.

But with the PS5 Pro retailing at £699 ($699 in the US) and a single DualSense Edge controller going for £209.99, gamers should probably brace for a four-figure price tag.

MailOnline has contacted PlayStation for comment on pricing and availability.
