Selena Gomez and rumored fiancé Benny Blanco have been vocal about their hopes of one day having children. Talking about her plans for the future in a new Vanity Fair profile, the actress and recently minted billionaire didn’t comment on the couple’s marital status, though she did reveal that she “can’t carry [her] own children.” “I unfortunately … have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy,” the 32-year-old said. “That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez has previously detailed her chronic struggles with lupus and her resulting 2017 kidney transplant, but has long expressed her desire to be a mother in spite of her health complications. Earlier this year, she told Time that she had always planned to adopt if she was still single when she turned 35. Of course, now that Blanco is in the picture, there’s been plenty of speculation about whether they might pursue parenthood — especially after Blanco told Howard Stern point blank “I wanna have kids” in May.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Gomez said she’s looking forward to being a mom someday, no matter how she gets there. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she said, but added: “I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms,” she continued. “I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different … At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
