Chelsea have mistakenly revealed one of the Premier League’s major awards winners of the 2023/24 campaign and were very quickly forced to backtrack on their announcement
Chelsea announced that Cole Palmer is the Premier League Young Player of the Season – by mistake.
Palmer lifted the award after a sensational first season at Stamford Bridge, beating competition from former Manchester City teammates Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, plus Arsenal stars Bukayo Saka and William Saliba. Alexander Isak, Kobbie Mainoo and Destiny Udogie rounded off a talented list.
England international Palmer secured the award, however Chelsea slipped up and published the announcement shortly before 5pm on Friday night on their website. They showed Palmer, who has struck 22 times in the league this term for the Blues, posing with the trophy.
A statement declared Palmer’s triumph too, and spoke about his wonderful debut campaign in west London.
It read: “Cole Palmer has won the Premier League’s Hublot Young Player of the Season Award after an outstanding first season at Chelsea. After signing from Manchester City on deadline day, Palmer has consistently produced performances of the highest quality during his maiden year in Blue.
“The 22-year-old has scored 22 times in the league to date and has 10 assists, meaning he has 32 Premier League goal involvements in just 33 appearances this season. The England international’s form means he is currently second in the rankings for goals and assists in the Premier League this season, with one game remaining
“Palmer is the only Chelsea to player to have claimed the award since it was first given out following the 2019/20 season, when Liverpool ’s Trent Alexander-Arnold lifted the trophy. Prior to his recent 22nd birthday, Palmer became only the third player in Premier League history to reach 30-plus goal involvements in a single season while aged 21 or younger.

“The forward also matched Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard’s Chelsea record of 16 home Premier League goals in a season, with highlights including a four-goal haul against Everton and a dramatic hat-trick in our win over Manchester United.
“Palmer fought off fierce competition to claim the title, with Manchester City duo Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, Arsenal pair Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, plus Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie also on the shortlist. Congratulations, Cole!”
Chelsea quickly attempted to rectify their error, taking down their announcment just 25 minutes after it was published. Eventually, at 630pm, the Premier League made an announcement of their own, confirming Palmer’s triumph.
Palmer will be aiming to round off his season in the best possible way this weekend when Chelsea take on Bournemouth. Palmer has already scored 27 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions this season.
