Hogwarts Legacy 2 One of Publisher’s ‘Biggest Priorities’ for the Future

Must read

Warner Bros seems ready to greenlight a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy following its extreme sales success last year, with the firm stating a follow-up is one of its “biggest priorities” for the next few years. When speaking to its strategic outlook at a Bank of America Conference (via Variety) today, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said: “Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.”

With the Harry Potter IP backing it, Hogwarts Legacy was always tipped to be a sales success, but to become the USA’s best-selling game of the year and break a 14-year Call of Duty and Rockstar Games streak topped all expectations. At the start of 2024, it was reported to have sold more than 22 million copies. Surprisingly, however, developer Avalanche Software never capitalised on the overwhelming success with additional content. All it’s ever added post-launch was a Photo Mode and unlocked previously added cosmetic items for all consoles.

What has been rumoured, though, is there is a Director’s Cut version of Hogwarts Legacy in the works, with part of the Suicide Squad team Rocksteady Studios brought in to aid development after its $200 million flop from earlier in 2024. Speaking to the release today, Wiedenfels said it was a “miss” for the company, but its efforts in the video game space continue to be a “strategic asset”. With that reportedly in the works to bridge the gap between Hogwarts Legacy and its sequel, the latter isn’t expected to launch for a number of years.
