For people heading away for a last minute summer getaway there is some bad news as some EU airports re-introduce strict cabin rules.

The 100ml liquids rule was scrapped at some EU airports but from today it has been brought back.

A similar move was also introduced across some UK airports earlier this year in June following an announcement from the Department for Transport (DfT).

This means that for many people carrying hand luggage, they will only be able to carry on tiny toiletries still like perfumes, suncream and shampoo.

So what do these new measures all mean?

What were the European rules about bringing back liquids?

In some EU airports like Amsterdam and Rome, new scanning machines had been introduced which uses CT X-ray technology.

These let passengers carry liquids above 100ml and keep other items in bags rather than taking them out to put in trays.

Around 350 of these scanners are currently in use across countries like Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Other airports don’t have them in place yet and are still trialling the new technology.

How and why have they changed?

The 100ml limit has been reinstalled by the EU due to technical issue with the new equipment that needs to be addressed.

In a statement on the European Commission website, it states: ‘This precautionary measure is not in response to any new threat but addresses a temporary technical issue, undertaken in alignment with the EU’s international partners.

‘The Commission is collaborating closely with Member States and the European Civil Aviation Conference to develop swift technical solutions, ensuring the highest standards of safety and security in air travel.’

How are they different from the UK rules?

Like in the EU, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced in June that the 100ml liquids rule across UK airports must be re-introduced.

State-of-the-art scanning equipment was originally meant to be installed across UK airports by June 2024 so that travellers could carry on liquids over 100ml.

But the government said the systems needed improving after new information came to light.

This means the target of scrapping hand luggage limit rules by this year has been missed.

Some smaller airports like Teesside and London City Airport did meet the deadline because they are smaller and so it was faster to update their systems.

So airport bosses were left angry when there was a sudden u-turn made by the government.

When does the 100ml liquid rule change?

The change comes in place today (September 1) and it is not yet known when the rules will be relaxed again.

It is therefore unclear how long the situation will last and it is still best to pack those mini toiletries.
