Rayner’s right to switch off is ‘exact opposite of flexibility’

Mr Turnpenny also said he was “shocked” by the countless posts from flexible working advocates on LinkedIn touting the policy as a “big step forward”.

He said: “This isn’t flexible working, is it? Surely making me sit at my desk from 9-5.30 is the exact opposite of flexibility?

“I have codified work hours in my contract, but sometimes I log on early and finish early, or log off late and start late the next day. And guess what? I don’t need a ‘code of practice’ to make that happen.”

Mr Turnpenny is responsible for filling hundreds of UK graduate consulting roles at the New York-listed firm, including within technology, engineering and manufacturing. 

The recruiter made clear that he was sharing his own personal views rather than speaking on behalf of Accenture. 

Mr Turnpenny argued that the employers should address “the root causes of overtime”, such as poor leadership skills, tedious bureaucracy, inefficient processes and presenteeism.

Accenture, which specialises in IT consulting, employs about 750,000 workers across 49 countries. The firm’s UK operation includes offices in London, Manchester and Newcastle.

Accenture declined to comment.
