A teenager has been decapitated in a shark attack while he was solo spearfishing off the coast of Jamaica.

Jahmari Reid, 16, went missing on Monday and his mutilated body was recovered by divers the next morning near the famous Montego Bay.

The teen’s dad, Michael Reid, was on the beach when his son’s body was brought onshore, telling the Jamaica Observer: ‘I can’t believe that he went to sea by himself and that was the outcome. Sad to know. I feel so bad.’

According to local media, Jahmari’s head and left hand were bitten off by the shark.

Divers claimed to have seen a massive tiger shark, a species behind many fatal attacks, swimming near where Jahmari’s body was discovered.

Fisherman Christopher Reynolds was also on the beach when Jahmari’s body was brought ashore, and he said: ‘All of the fisherman went out there and, while they were diving to take him up, they saw the big shark.

‘They shot at him but they didn’t get him.’

It’s just the fourth time an unprovoked shark attack has left someone dead in Jamaica, according to the Shark Attack File.

Jahmari’s father has said his son was aware of the dangers of spearfishing and diving alone.

The Trelawny Police are investigating the death.
