As rumors regarding Grand Theft Auto 6‘s potential price swirl, developers believe it could set a new standard across the industry. While Rockstar has yet to address the rampant speculation that it intends to sell GTA 6 above the standard $70 price point that’s most often used for AAA releases, fans are concerned that, due to its sheer scale, the game could end up retailing for over $100. That would be a massive increase but the argument is that the development cost of GTA 6 may justify such an enormous price tag.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), Michael Douse, the Director of Publishing for Baldur’s Gate 3, notes that he believes Rockstar could change the current pricing trend with Grand Theft Auto 6.

Douse notes that all games should cost more for consumers since it’s now more expensive to make them than ever, so taking this kind of proportional pricing model into account, GTA 6 should theoretically cost more than $70 due to its sheer size and depth. The developer concludes that the industry is simply waiting on Rockstar to implement such a strategy before more studios start using the same plan.

Rockstar’s Silence Is Hurting GTA 6

Here is why GTA 6 may end up being hurt by developer Rockstar’s silence on gameplay, leading to fan expectations that are impossible to meet.

What Do We Know About GTA 6?

Just A Few Snippets Of Gameplay

Despite capping off 2023 with the first teaser trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar has been very cagey regarding additional information. One of the more prolific rumors doing the rounds is that the game has managed to rack up an estimated budget of over $1 billion, but this has yet to be verified by anyone working at Rockstar or publisher Take-Two. This report is what largely led to speculation that the base version of GTA 6 will cost $100 which seems unlikely given current pricing trends but stranger things have happened.

As for the actual game, GTA 6 is taking players back to the sun-soaked beaches of Vice City, a location largely based on Miami, Florida. The game will feature the franchise’s first-ever playable female character, Lucia, who seemingly becomes embroiled in a Bonnie and Clyde-esque relationship with an unnamed male partner. The journey will see them committing plenty of crimes together, although their motivation for doing so remains a mystery.

As for when players can expect to get their hands on Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar has penciled in a 2025 release date. Take-Two earnings calls suggest it will drop in the third quarter of next year but this has yet to officially be announced. More news will likely be shared in the coming months.
