In the third film based on the Sega video games, Sonic reunites with friends Knuckles (Idris Eba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
First introduced in the video game Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001, Shadow is a creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Possessing extraordinary speed, as well as Chaos Control, a power that allows him to manipulate space and time, he’s initially depicted as an antagonist to Sonic, though in the video games from Sega on which the film franchise is based, he eventually becomes an ally.
Coming to theaters following a pair of films that took in over $319M in box office grosses worldwide, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is slated to premiere on December 20. Serving as the director for all three installments, Jeff Fowler in this case worked from a script by Pat Casey & Josh Miller and John Whittington, based on a story by Casey & Miller.
Aside from Reeves, Krysten Ritter is the most high-profile new addition to the Sonic ensemble in the third film. For now, her role remains under wraps. Other returning cast members include Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Tika Sumpter and Elba. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno produced alongside executive producers Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Fowler, Tommy Gormley and Tim Miller.
