A source told MailOnline: “Chris and Dakota have tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work.

“They’ll always have love for each other but they’ve both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term.

“They’re both busy people, Chris has been in Europe with Coldplay and they both have personal priorities, passions and work commitments which don’t naturally intertwine with each other.

“They wanted it to work but it just hasn’t, and they’ve now accepted it is best to move on.”

The former couple secretly got engaged earlier this year – with Dakota dropping hints when she called his kids with Gwyneth Paltrow her “step children”.

Chris, shares daughter Apple, 19, and son Moses, 17, with his ex Gwyneth, 51.

Dakota, who is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, has recently been filming new romance movie Materialist with co-stars Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in New York.

She was last spotted in London watching Stevie Nicks perform at Hyde Park with Pedro.

Chris famously split from actress wife Gwyneth Paltrow in March 2014 after ten years of marriage.

His split from Dakota may shock fans after she gushed about being a part of his family.

The Fifty Shades of Grey star declared that she loves Chris’ kids “like her life depends on it.”

She said:  “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.

“How do I feel about motherhood? I’m so open to that.

“I’ve gotten to this place where I really want to experience everything life has to offer.

“And especially being a woman, I’m like: ‘What a magical f***ing thing to do. What a crazy, magical, wild experience.

“If that’s meant to happen for me, I’m totally down for it.

“We’re not here for very long, so if I’m meant to be a mother, bring it on.”
