In the past year, police have increased raids on suspected cannabis growers across the country, with almost 1,000 people arrested and 1,000 warrants issued.
The NPCC has warned that it is not just gang members being targeted. Landlords and tradespeople found to have “facilitated” the trade also face prosecution.
“We’ve also prosecuted landlords of these places who at best may be turning a blind eye to what’s happening,” said Mr Lewis.
“We’ve seen prosecutions of estate agents, electricians and people who have facilitated this trade.
“Of course, most of our tradespeople in the UK do a great job but there is a small minority who do undertake these types of activities – and we do prosecute them.”
The NPCC has urged the public to look out for signs that buildings in their town might have been taken over by drug gangs – and to pass on intelligence to police.
Indications that empty stores and offices might be being used to grow cannabis include windows being taped up and bright lights shining in the early hours of the morning.
They may also have tents outside as properties can become too hot for people to stay in at night.
