Scotland is home to some of the most aggressive seagulls in the UK, with residents in cities from Dumfries to Inverness complaining about plagues of the birds snatching food directly from their mouths.

A café in St Andrews has come up with a novel way to protect customers from losing their lunch to thieving avians: introducing “seagull insurance” for £1.

Kate Carter-Larg, 35, owner of the Cheesy Toast Shack on the town’s beachfront, said the birds would take food from up to 30 customers a day, costing the café hundreds of pounds in replacement meals.
