Footage showed the panic in the first moments after the Russian artillery strike on innocent civilians in Kostyantynivka, the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk region.

Thick plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the supermarket as heroic emergency services aided wounded civilians.

A search and rescue operation was underway following the vicious shelling.

There has been repeated Russian shelling of an industrial city of almost 70,000 which has held out against the invaders.

Unlike today’s HIMARS missile strike by Ukraine in Kursk region which appears to have killed hundreds, the victims here were reported to be civilians and not military personnel.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said:  “The attack of Russian terrorists on an ordinary supermarket and post office.

“People are under the rubble.

“A rescue operation is underway and everything will be done to save people.

Russia will be responsible for this terror, and we will do everything so that the world will continue to be with Ukraine, support our defence and save the lives of our people.”

Regional Governor Vadym Filashkin initially said Russia used artillery.

But later he said the attack with from an X-38 air-to-surface missile.

Nova Poshta, Ukraine’s largest private postal company, said its cargo office in the supermarket was damaged in the strike.

The company said on X: “All our employees are alive. One colleague received a concussion he is getting all the necessary help.”

Residential houses, shops and more than dozen cars were damaged in the heinous attack, according to the interior minister’s post on Telegram.

Kostiantynivka lies just about 13km from the active combat line in Ukraine’s east.

Kyiv-held parts of the Donetsk region regularly come under Russian shelling and air strikes.

Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, said: “The strike on the supermarket in Konstantinovka is another [act of] terror by the Russians.

“War with civilians is all they know how to do.”

The latest toll in the horrific attack is 11 dead and 37 wounded.
