The Booker Prize is the leading literary award for single works of fiction published in the UK in English, with the judges looking for the best work of long-form fiction, selected from entries published in the UK and Ireland between October 1st 2023 and September 30th 2024.

Wild Houses is Barrett’s first novel after his novella and six short stories Young Skins in 2013, and a second short story collection Homesickness in 2022.

In a review for RTÉ Culture, Aimee Walsh described Wild Houses as ‘carefully rendered, woven with beautiful language, often veering between the brutal and the sublime’.

Last year’s Booker shortlist featured Irish authors Paul Murray and Paul Lynch, with Lynch winning the prize for his dystopian novel Prophet Song.
