Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns official announcement trailer released, DLC expansion set for launch on September 24

Must read

NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games have just hit fans with a tidal wave of information about upcoming content set to release for Mortal Kombat 1. The new update is coming up this Fall as an all-new expansion called “Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns,” and there are a lot of amazing goodies for fans to look forward to with it.

Coming right off of their official panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the companies released an official announcement trailer for Khaos Reigns that details a lot of what we can expect to get when it rolls around. For starters, though, fans will see Khaos Reigns launch on September 24, 2024.

This new trailer begins with a look at the upcoming cinematic story expansion. We see that a new version of Havik appears to be the main villain this time around, and this blood thirsty warrior wants to spread anarchy across the realms.

“This new Havik is different from ours,” a voice can be heard saying over clips of more story scenes. “He doesn’t want freedom. He wants to burn everything down.”

A handful of cinematic story scenes are shown that feature the new Sektor and Cyrax in this trailer as well. These are mixed in with our first-ever look at gameplay for both upcoming DLC characters.

Sektor can be seen fighting with rocket boosted punches, the ability to fire a flamethrower, and retractable arms that emerge from her back and do things like grab the opponent and slam them into the ground. Cyrax’s gameplay reveals a special move that functions very similarly to classic Cyrax’s net, but instead it appears as a green foam that traps the opponent. We also see grenades and a wild air flip kick as part of her arsenal.

The trailer moves on to the next DLC character in Khaos Reigns, Noob Saibot. A quick story mode clip confirms that this version of Noob Saibot is indeed Bi-Han, but “not as you remember.”

Noob appears to be a villain in Mortal Kombat 1 who has sided with the new Havik. A brief look at Noob Saibot’s gameplay shows attacks such as his shadow clone running up to the opponent and tossing them backward into Noob, a teleport slam, a projectile that sends his foe into a portal, and also what appears to be a glimpse at one of his Fatalities.

Following this, the trailer goes on to show the full main roster DLC character line up for Khaos Reigns. We see in-game renders for all six of the new contenders, with Ghostface, Noob Saibot, Sektor, Cyrax, Conan, and T-1000 giving us a full look at how they’ll appear in MK1.

The trailer reveals that Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns will be released on September 24, 2024. The Khaos Reigns expansion is set to include new story chapters, Kombat Pack 2 (which is comprised of the six aforementioned fighters), as well as the original Kombat Pack.

What’s interesting is that the Kombat Pack 2 will not be sold as its own standalone DLC package, meaning you’ll have to buy the Khaos Reigns expansion to get access to it. That said, Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot are all slated to become available at the same time that the Khaos Reigns expansion launches, while Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan’s release dates are to be announced at a later time.

Those who pre-order Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns will receive four additional DLC costumes. Wedding Scorpion, Empress Mileena, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 costumes for both Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot are all included with this pre-order bonus.

Lastly, it has been revealed that Animalities are not only making a return, but they will be added to the game as a free update on launch day for all players. The trailer provides a glimpse at several of the new finishers, including one featuring a hyena, a hippo, gorilla, the skeleton of a T-Rex (which we believe to be Quan Chi’s), two wolves, a scorpion (which we believe to be Scorpion’s), and a puffer fish (confirmed to be Rain’s).

And finally, we have the full brunt of Mileena’s new Animality. She transforms into a praying mantis and proceeds to eat parts of her opponent and then rip them apart.
