Spanish PM to testify at his wife’s corruption inquiry

Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, will testify as a witness in an investigation about allegations of corruption and influence peddling against his wife.

The questioning of the prime minister in a criminal investigation will be carried out on July 30 by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado at Sánchez’s official residence, the Moncloa palace, the court said.

It follows allegations that Begoña Gómez used her husband’s position as leverage within her professional circles, notably with Juan Carlos Barrabés, a businessman who was seeking public funding.

Pressure has mounted on the Socialist leader after Barrabés, who received €23 million in government contracts, said that he held eight meetings with Gómez at the Moncloa palace. At two of these meetings Sánchez was present, Barrabés testified.
