Xbox will get new “Halo with Portals” game Splitgate 2 in 2025

Must read

If you enjoyed the portal-jumping action of Splitgate, we have some great news: we’ll be able to start collecting Splitgate 2 achievements in 2025. 1047 Games has announced Splitgate 2 for Xbox, dropping a cinematic trailer for its upcoming free Xbox game.

Splitgate 2 announced for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One

Last year, 1047 Games revealed that it had stopped feature development on Splitgate so the team could go “all-in to focus on a new game in the Splitgate universe.” That next game has now been revealed as Splitgate 2, which “should look and feel completely fresh from the original,” 1047 told Xbox Wire.

“We rethought our approach to portals, hoping to ensure true Portal Gods could excel, but that no one had to constantly portal to taste victory,” 1047 Games says. “We added a faction-based system to add more depth to the gameplay experience. And we rebuilt everything from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. There will be familiar elements, but on the whole, Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely fresh from the original.”

Looking at the Splitgate 2 Xbox store page, the 4v4 multiplayer shooter appears to have three factions to play: agile Aeros, time-manipulating Meridian, and guns-blazing Sabrasks. Each faction will have its own “dynamic abilities and diverse weapons,” and teams will be able to mix and match between each of them.

Splitgate quickly became a popular choice for shooter fans, thanks to its mix of Portal-style portals and Halo-like gunplay. Of course, being free-to-play also made it an easy choice for players, so it comes as no surprise that 1047 Games has gone in the same direction with its sequel.

We still have a fair wait ahead of us until we can dive into Splitgate 2, so if you fancy blasting your way through something else in the meantime, check out our list of the best FPS games on Xbox.
