King Charles’s seven-word response when handed pint of beer named in his honour

King Charles and Queen Camilla have been taking in the sights of Guernsey on day two of their royal visit to the Channel Islands, with the King’s response to being offered a pint of beer.

Following their arrival on the island this morning and their attendance at the Special Sitting of the Stages of Deliberation, the royals have been on the Crown Pier exploring a showcase of Guernsey’s culture, heritage and produce.

One of the many food and drink items on offer was a pint aptly named ‘Charles’, which was brewed by the Little Big Brew Company in honour of the Coronation last year.

The tap rather appropriately featured a crown on the top, and as he sipped the King noted that he better not have too much in the warm July weather.

He said: “I’d better not have too much” before gesturing to the assembled media and issuing this seven-word quip: “I bet they’re all dying for some!”

The Queen then joked: “They’re queuing up!”

Head brewer Daniel O’Brien explained that the beer is mostly brewed with British hops and has a golden colour, caramel note and floral hops.

He said it had been a “huge hit” with customers, while Simon de la Rue, who also works for the brewery, added: “It’s gone gangbusters!

“King seemed to really like it. He said it had a good aroma but that he shouldn’t drink too much at this time of day.

There was also a treat in store for Queen Camilla as she was handed some vintage cheddar cheese by Dave Domaille from Guernsey Dairy.

He told her it was an “early birthday present” as tomorrow she will be marking her 77th birthday, as she and the King attend the State Opening of Parliament in Westminster.

Others in the crowd also wished Camilla a happy birthday, as she replied: “Thank you. Sometimes you ought to forget them!”

During their walkabout, Their Majesties also met with Barrie Ainsworth, who is celebrating his landmark 80th birthday today.

The King told Mr Ainsworth, who had come out to see the royal visit with his family: “I hope they’re looking after you. Make sure you have a very enjoyable day.”

Earlier in the day, the Queen had sparked concern when she emerged with her right ankle in a bandage, however fans were reassured that it was simply the result of a sprain from Monday.

It is not known if the injury occurred during the couple’s trip to Jersey, the first stop on their royal tour, as they carried out engagements in horrendous wet weather.
