The Foreign Office has issued travel advice for those jetting off to Italy, including visitors heading to the Vatican City. And take note as not following the advice could end in on-the-spot fines.

On the official gov.uk website, government officials have highlighted two key points that travellers should be clued up on to avoid being slapped with a hefty fine, which could take a serious bite out of your holiday funds. Under the section titled ‘laws and cultural differences’, they’ve pinpointed personal ID requirements and public transport rules as areas where Brits need to pay attention.

According to the guidance, it’s essential to carry at least one form of identification with you at all times, and sometimes even two might be necessary. The officials state: “You must always be able to show some form of ID. In most cases a copy of the photo page of your passport should be enough, but you may also be asked for a second form of photo ID. The police will normally ask for your full passport if you are stopped while driving.”

As well as this, the advice includes a stern warning about validating tickets before hopping on public transport to dodge fines that can reach up to 500 euros. Thankfully if you’re savvy and settle the fine straight away, it could be reduced to just 50 euros.

They elaborate that ticket validation is a must before embarking on your journey. They detail: “Officials patrol public transport and will issue an on-the-spot fine of 100 to 500 euros (reduced to 50 euros if paid immediately) if you do not have a validated ticket.”
