A family were all ready for their summer holiday but were gutted when the dad was told he could not fly with his passport.

Beth Trubutt-Rogers, known as Budgeting Mum online, was buzzing to take her two children and her husband for a break in Spain, but when they arrived at the airport to check-in, the dad was unfortunately told he was not permitted to fly. “My husband wasn’t allowed to come on holiday with us,” his wife said. Now, Beth has issued a warning to all families heading abroad this summer.

The dad had checked his passport and the expiry date was March 2025 – so at the time he had eight months left on his passport – but Ryanair informed him that his passport had “expired”.

Explaining what happened, Beth took to Instagram via her page @budgetingmumofficial, which has 420,000 followers, and said: “We went to drop off our bags, his passport was checked and they told us that his passport was expired, even though his expiry date was March 2025.

“[We] had already checked in online and entered all of our passport details but nothing had flagged until we got to the airport.”

She added: “The rules changed when we left the EU so the extension on our passports is now no longer valid, so you have 10 years from the issue date, rather than what the expiry date says.” Her husband’s passport was issued in June 2014.

The mum said it was the “most stressful trip” as she was left travelling on their original flight with her three-year-old and four-year-old children. She said not having her partner to help her was “like not having my right arm”.

The husband was able to get a Jet 2 flight the following day to meet his family. The mum added: “Jet 2 allow passenger to travel still so he was allowed to get a Jet 2 flight the following morning to join us.”
