King Charles has urged the Three Lions to “secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals” ahead of the Euro finals this weekend.
The monarch released his humourous statement just moments after England secured a 2-1 win to Netherlands as they aced the semi-finals.
The King’s statement, which will resonate with any England fan, said: “My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship – and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.
“If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!
“Good luck, England. Charles R’.” The King wasn’t the only senior royal to send his congratulations – Prince William also took to X to congratulate the squad.
“What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! #EURO2024 Finalists W.” Prince William was referring to Ollie Watkins who scored in the 90th minute, securing England’s win.
The 28-year-old Aston Villa forward came off the bench to provide the moment of magic, writing his name into England’s history books.
The future monarch’s support for Ollie and the rest of the team has been clear, with the prince sitting in the stands during England’s match with Switzerland last Saturday.
As President of the Football Association, he regularly attends England matches and was pictured punching the air in another late-victory. It was a display that showed “raw emotion”, according to a body language expert.
He was pictured with England players including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bukayo Saka after that match.
The England squad now faces Spain in the final this Sunday, July 14 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. Kick-off is at 8pm. It is not known if Prince William will be in the stands during the pivotal moment in British football.
The brush of uncertainty lies over whether or not William will be required to step in for Princess Kate at Wimbledon this weekend. In being asked to do so, he could well miss Sunday’s game.
Confirmation on whether or not the Princess of Wales will make an apperance is not set to be made until the day itself as she continues to recover from preventative chemotherapy.
