Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic speaker of the House, has stopped short of saying that President Biden should stay in the race for re-election, saying that “time is running short”.
Pelosi has hitherto been an ally of the president. She is by far the most senior Democrat to demur over his continuing in the race, however, leaving open the possibility that others in the party will use her intervention to break cover and call for Biden to step down themselves.
Biden, 81, has maintained for days that he will not step down.
