The UK’s new Labour government has confirmed Stephanie Peacock as the new gambling minister.

Her as parliamentary under-secretary for sport, gambling and civil society and minister for equalities sits within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

It was rumoured that Barnsley South MP Peacock would transition into the role of gambling minister as part of the government having played the same role in recent years, albeit as part of Labour’s shadow cabinet in opposition to the Conservatives and their gambling minister Stuart Andrew.

Peacock said on X: “It is an honour to have been asked by the Prime Minister to serve in our new Labour Government. Can’t wait to get started in the DCMS with Lisa Nandy.”

On Friday, Wigan MP Nandy was confirmed as DCMS leader, overseeing UK gambling’s white paper reforms as part of a wide remit.

Implementation of the white paper was put on hold during the general election campaign but will be back in full swing soon. Consultations on financial risk checks and a statutory levy on operators to fund gambling harm research, education and prevention currently dominate the agenda for both Labour and the Gambling Commission, the UK regulator.
